Why you can’t stick to using a planner

Choosing ONE planner, using it & sticking to it gives you chill?

First off, you’re NOT alone. Sticking to one, two, or even just using a planner is harder than climbing Mount Everest in high heels wearing a Haute Couture dress.

→ It was so hard for me to remain loyal to a planner that I designed one from scratch

Truth is, I went on a personal quest almost 20 years ago to find what makes a good physical planner + how I can spot one easily (even when it’s pitch black, I have a cold, or I have no more chocolate to eat).

Because you don’t have a whole day to listen my PhD results, let’s break them down & start with the 3 most obvious/ detrimental reasons why sticking to a physical planner is hard AF.

#1 “Planners are just for kids/ high schoolers”

or for a 20-something millenial/ influencer named Elise who needs to track her vanity metrics on social media.

Big Brainwash Ever

I wish I can put my high heels on the messy gurus who stated that “when you’re an adult, you must go digital or else“.

Sure, the debate between analog and/or digital is worthy. Not all people are at ease with digital because:

^

they want to reduce their screen times

^

it can be tricky to get everything synchronised

^

tech glitches happen

^

feel a less in control of their daily / weekly schedule

Personal preferences aside, everybody can benefit from using a planner to reduce/ avoid/ limit:

  • work overload,
  • “too much information” syndrome,
  • protect your daily bandwidth (aka the energy you have on a daily basis)
  • manage your dinner with Auntie Flora and your evening with George (around a coffee, of course)

A planner will keep you organize (#duh) but it’ll be a bodyguard of your own joie de vivre.

How on earth can you be at your wine degustation Friday at 7pm with sexy Edward if your nasty boss add “short minute/ super short projects” to your workload?

A planner is a simple tool to remember you have a life that’s waiting OUTSIDE your 9 to 5.

#2 “There’s something wrong with me”

THIS one is so mean and nasty. And, it populates so easily in the self-help world.

Think about it for a minute, if self-help gurus don’t make you feel second guessing yourself about your own talents, skills, abilities, how could they put insanely high price tags on worthless planners?

(Yes, my friends… I tried roughly 30+ planners in the last 15 years and 99% of them are just bunch of paper with no support, no real meaning, but 100% of guilt induced)

Breaking news: There’s NOTHING wrong with you.

Ok, sticking to a planner is not your cup of mocha, yet. But, it’s ONLY because, you’ve never taken a moment to really map out what YOU need from a planner.

None of them are created equal.

#3 “No one shows you how to use a planner properly”

And, by properly, I’m not talking about which pens or which colour to choose for the cover…

I’m talking about how to set up a planner where your needs/ wants are the #1 priority

We, all, know life gets crazy:

– the stay at home of 3

– the new Dad of a twins

– the 3 part-time Community College Students

– the intern on local TV

NONE of them have the same priorities, why on earth would they use the same damn planner?

Now, don’t get me wrong.

Learning the basics of planner settings is not rocket science. No need to spend hours, sweating over your planner to make it perfect.

It’s ONLY to remind yourself that your priorities are worth pursuing, you deserve Me Time, you need to slow down…

If you load your planner with 100% of external obligations like:

-volunteering 5 times/ week when you barely have time to sleep

-baking blueberry muffins on ultra short notice for a local event because you’re such a sweetheart

– pick up your colleagues kids after practice because… you have time.

THEN, rethink how you use your time right now. For your own sake.

A planner is meant to support you, not to hinder your way of living.
